English Translation:

Hot days, drought days
My face was dry like a crack in the soil
My field withered, nothing left to harvest
I asked, I whispered, for what?

Winter hit me again, cold as a sword
The glaze in my eyes, so cold and rainy
Sadness stares from the cracks in the walls
I asked, I whispered, until when?

But when evening came
With the evening wind
A leaf falls on the roof of my home
I know
I hear
Someone always walks with me

I remember my screaming loneliness
I will cover my face with my two hands
I have shared my sorrow with a piece of bread
I asked; is it all worth it?

Thus I will carry my prayer on and on
My lips whisper out of my poverty
I know, someone up there
Will see the lamp light in my window

Actually, it's not Avremel's, it's Ofra Haza's.

(but otherwise, solid work)

Thanks for the info. I did know that. however, Avremel redid and re-sung it, so I attributed it to him, as the singer, not composer...

Of course, I never knew about the song until Avremel sang it, and he does it really beautifully. (Not that I've listened to the original of course)

I took the liberty of polishing your rough translation of this very beautiful song poem, introduced by Ofra Hazeh, and now sung so dramatically by Avraham Fried.

Words/Music: Rami Kedar / Effi Netzer

The days were hot, there were days of drought
My face was dried out as baked earth
My field was withered, nothing remained to harvest
I asked, I whispered, what's it all for?

The winter struck again, cold as a sword
The outlook: cold and rainy in my two eyes
And from the cracks in the walls, sadness showed
I asked, I whispered, how much longer?

But at evening time
In the evening wind
A leaf falls on the roof of my house
I know
I hear
Someone always walks with me

I recall my loneliness, screaming,
Covering my face with my two hands.
I gave myself a break with a morsel of bread
And asked, is it truly worth it?

My prayer raises up higher, and higher still.
My lips still whisper of my despair.
Yet I know someone is there, above --
Who sees the light of the oil lamp in my window

But at evening time
In the evening wind
A leaf falls on the roof of my house
Then I know, I hear
Someone always walks with me
But at evening time
In the evening wind
A leaf falls on the roof of my house
I know
I hear
Someone always walks with me
